Description

  • Marten van Cleve I
  • Peasant woman holding a mug
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 6 November 2001, lot 201;
Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 2 October 2002, lot 373 (as attributed to Pieter Balten).

Condition

The actual painting is less tred and more subdued in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel is flat and stable and lightly bevelled to all sides. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish layer. Tiny restored paint losses and small discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye, mainly in the figures clothes and hand. Inspection under UV light reveals significantly larger areas of retouching. The face appears fairly intact. Offered in a decorative carved wood frame with some losses.
