Condition
The actual painting is less red and more yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of two planks, joined vertically, and is reinforced by modern and older battens (some parts missing) to the reverse. The plank is slightly bevelled to the upper and lower edges. The join is visible to the front, and there is a vertical crack running along the right edge, as can be seen in the catalogue illustration, but overall the paint surface seems to be in good condition. The paint surface is under a fine layer of dirt and discoloured varnish and has a very fine and dense craquelure pattern. Tiny discoloured retouchings can be seen in the sky and in a few of the figures in front, as well as tiny paint losses in the sky. A retouched scratch can be seen in the upper left corner, as well as a minor one in the upper right corner. Inspection under UV light confirms the above, but is furthermore impeded by thick and dirty varnish layer. Offered in a later plaster, and gilt frame, a few chips. (ML)
