Description

  • Meiffren Conte
  • A still life with an ornate silver gilt ewer, a silver gilt jewellery casket, shells, oranges and a pomegranate, all arranged on a partly draped stone ledge
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas appears to be unlined. There are a few tiny paint losses lower left and centre left, and two larger ones in the lemon and in the upper centre, as is visible in the catalogue. There's a fine craquelure throughout which is further beginning to lift in some areas. The paint surface is somewhat abraded in the background and is under a very dirty layer of varnish. Discoloured scattered retouchings are visible in the background, in the drapery and in the lemons. Inspection under UV light reveals additional strengthening in the lemons and pome granates and in the lower half of the ewer. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame with a few damages. Catalogue Note

The silver gilt ewer can be seen in several paintings by Conte, suggesting that the painter owned the piece himself. See for example a work sold, London, Sotheby's, 14 December 2000, lot 210, as well as that reproduced in C. Salvi La nature morte en France au XVIIe siècle, Tournai 2000, p. 149.
