Description

  • A tronie of an elderly bearded man, bust length
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The actual painting is slightly less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining. The paint surface is secure, if a little abraded in the coat and beard, and is under a very dirty and uneven layer of varnish. A few small old retouched paint losses are visible to the background upper right and upper left. Inspection under UV light furthermore reveals tiny more recent retouchings around the figure's eyes and nose, and on top of his head. Offered in a later plain gilt wood frame in fair condition. (MW)
