Description

  • Jan Baptist Weenix
  • Portrait of a young girl, in a landscape, three quarter length, wearing a red hat
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Keimer, Cologne, 1979;
Anonymous sale, Cologne, Lempertz, 22-24 November 1979, lot 116 (as Haarlem School, 17th Century).

Condition

The actual painting is less red than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined (glue). The paint surface is in good condition and under a fine layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. The background to the right seems slightly rubbed. Tiny black surface dirts can be seen in the centre. A small repaired damage can be seen in the lower left corner, as well as one in the upper left corner. Inspection under Ultra Violet light is largely impeded by the varnish layer, but does confirm the above, as well as tiny retouchings along the right arm and in the dress. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame, in fair condition. (ML)

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the R.K.D., The Hague, for suggesting an attribution to Jan Baptist Weenix on the basis of photographs. This lovely portrait of a young peasant girl may be compared with the artist's Portrait of a Young Girl as a Shepherdess, in Musée de Picardie (inv. no. M.P. Lav. 1894.62).1
