Description

  • Willem van Bemmel
  • An extensive Italianate river landscape with travellers near ruins, shipping near a harbour beyond
  • signed lower right: WB(in ligature)emmel. f
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting. The canvas is unlined and has a strip lining along the edges. The paint surface seems to be in good condition, but has a few repaired damages, e.g. lower left corner, lower right corner in the rocks, and a few in the sky, of which most of them are only revealed by inspection under UV light. The paint surface is under a clear layer of varnish, but has a heavy craquelure pattern, which shows a minor tendency towards cupping. Overall, the painting is in good condition. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame with a few chips. (ML)
