Description

  • Wouter Knijff
  • A river landscape with a ruined castle and men casting a net from a rowing boat
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 14 December 2005, lot 46, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The actual painting is more grey in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel appears to consist of three planks joined horizontally, the upper one has split partways from the right edge on. The panel is bevelled on all sides. Furthermore the paint surface seems to be in good condition. Small discoloured retouchings can be detected along the left edge and in the sky. The brushwork in the buildings and foliage is nicely preserved. The paint surface is under a slightly discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals extensive retouchings along the upper join, a large area in the upper left corner, tiny scattered ones in the sky and one above the figure to the right and one near the tower in the centre. Offered in a cabinet style wooden frame, a few chips. (ML)
