Description

  • Frans de Hulst
  • A river estuary with a fortified village on the left bank, a rowing boat in the foreground;A fortified town by a river with fishermen hauling in their nets
  • a pair, both oil on panel, oval

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 3-5 December 1959, lot 55 and 56.

Condition

Both paintings are a little less blue and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Both single panels are sound and beveled along the edges. In the lower painting there's a dent in the lower centre. Otherwise, no damages are apparent. Both paint layers appear to be well preserved and are under a very dirty and discoloured varnish layer. In both works some tiny scattered retouchings and strengthening are visible, e.g. in the boats in the foreground, in the buildings and in the water. This is confirmed by inspection under UV light, but further inspection is impeded by the dirty varnish layer. Offered in decorative gilt plaster and wood frames, with a few losses. (MW)
