Description
- Peter Van de Velde
- The siege of a levantine castle with numerous figures in battle, warships in choppy waters beyond
- signed and dated lower right: P.V.Velden.1697
- oil on canvas
Condition
The actual painting is less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined (wax). No major damages seem to be apparent. Several small discoloured retouchings can be seen in the sky, along the upper edge, in the clouds to the left and centre, in the centre of the water, in the ships, and strengthening is visible in the figures, ships and rocks as well. Inspection under UV light confirms this and reveals additional larger repaired damages in the sky upper right and upper left, along the right edge, in the sail of the ship and along the lower edge and more strengthening overall. Offered in a plaster gilt wood frame, chips. (ML)
