Condition
The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The panel consists of three planks, joined vertically, and is cradled. There are no major damages apparent and the paint surface seems to be in good condition, although the face appears to have grown a little thin. Small scattered discoloured retouchings can be seen in the background, e.g. in both upper corners, along the joins, in the lace collar and in her face. The painting is under a dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under Ultra Violet light reveals the retouchings as mentioned above and reveals furthermore the unevenly applied varnish. Offered in a later brown painted wooden frame with a gilt inlay, in good condition. (ML)

Catalogue Note
A studio version of the portrait by Van Mierevelt, signed and dated 1614, in the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague (inv. no. 350), which is the pendant to a portrait of the sitter's husband Jacob van der Graeff (1586-1651), Heer van Hoogeveen.
Magdalena was the daughter of Paulus van Beresteyn (1548-1625), Burgomaster of Delft, and Volckera Claesdr. Knobbert (1554-1634), both portrayed by Van Mierevelt in 1617.
