Description
- Hieronymus Francken III
- The Massacre of the Innocents
- oil on panel, stamped on the reverse with the panel maker's mark of Guillaume Gabron (1609-1662), unframed
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 25 April 2001, lot 31 (as Flemish School, 17th Century).
Condition
The actual painting is softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of two planks, joined horizontally, and is bevelled on the right and left edges, and lightly on the lower edge. Both the lower and upper left corner show some wood losses, the lower one also shows a small crack. The paint surface is under a fine layer of dirt and discoloured varnish, but seems to be in good condition. A few small discoloured retouchings can be seen in the lower left corner. This is confirmed by inspection under Ultra Violet light, which also reveals tiny retouchings in the horse, but inspection is furthermore impeded by the thick and dirty varnish layer. Offered unframed. (ML)

Catalogue Note
Hieronymus Francken was the son of Frans Francken the Younger (1581-1642). He worked closely in the style of his father, but his figures are markedly more round and muscular.
