Description
- Albrecht Dürer
- Portrait of a man, head and shoulders, wearing a black coat with a fur collar and a black hat
- oil on panel
Provenance
With Thomas Agnew and Sons Ltd., London, by 1985, as by Quentin Matsys (according to a label on the reverse).
Condition
The actual painting is deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. There's a vertical dent along the upper right edge, but otherwise the single panel is sound. The panel is unbeveled and enlarged with thin strips of wood to all edges, possibly to fit the frame. No damages are apparent, but there's a minor tendency towards flaking, particularly in the upper centre. The paint surface is generally sound if slightly abraded in areas and is under a dirty varnish layer. A few small discoloured retouchings can be observed in the face and in the background, but further inspection under UV light is impeded by the varnish layer.
Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame with scroll leaf decorations and moulded borders in good condition. (MW)
