Description

  • Ecce homo
  • inscribed along the upper edge: RESPICITE.IN.ME.
  • oil on panel

Condition

The actual painting is less red and softer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of 2 vertical planks and the join has been reinforced to the reverse with 7 small batons. The panel is sound and very lightly bevelled on all sides. No major damages are apparent and the paint surface is secure, and under a dirty and uneven layer of varnish. There's a retouched paint loss to the lower left, as well as one to the lower right, which is confirmed by UV light. Further inspection under UV light is impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but there's possibly some minor strengthening underneath. Offered in a plain wood frame with a gilt fillet and some paint losses. (MW)
