Provenance

A.W. Liddell, April 1847 (according to a label on the reverse);
Anonymous sale ('The Property of a Gentleman'), London, Sotheby's, 18 October 1995, lot 16, where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has a modern and stable relining. The paint surface is secure and under a yellowed varnish. Under the varnish, UV light revels small repaired tears in the lower right corner and centre left. Some scattered retouchings and strengthenings also flouresce in the background, trees and sky, though large passages are in good original condition. A new varnish woudl improve the overall tonality. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with some minor knocks.
