Description

  • Saint John the Baptist;St Michael Archangel;Saint Bartholomew;Saint Sebastian
  • a set of four, all oil on panel, gold ground

Condition

All four paintings are composed of two horizontal panels which have been joined to the reverse. The first, third and fourth are secured by horse hair strips. In all four pictures the paint surface is uneven with scattered minor losses and all have a dirty varnish. Along the line of the join in all four the paint has started to lift. They all have some significant areas of paint loss which are visible in the catalogue illustration and further losses in the halos. In the first painting there is a protuberance bottom right caused by uneveness in the wood grain. In the second painting a nail has come through the paint surface bottom left. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouchings throughout all four, most notably in the faces and along the panel joins, and in the lamb which Saint John is holding. Offered unframed with red velvet surrounds.
