Description

  • A Kneeling Saint
  • oil on canvas, in an elaborate carved and gilt wood frame

Provenance

Kent House (according to an inscription on the reverse).

Condition

The canvas has been relined. Two inches from the upper outline of the figure it appears as though the original canvas has been cut and placed on to another canvas. The dark background thus appears to be a later extension. This can be made out in the catalogue illustration. The paint surface is a little abraded in certain areas and scattered discoloured retouchings can be made out with the naked eye. These are confirmed under UV light as well as some further retouchings and an area of restoration of 10 by 2 cm lower left. The painting is offered in a very elaborately carved wooden frame with some losses and cracks in the corners but otherwise in fiar condition.
