Condition

The canvas has been relined and the relining is stable. The paint surface is in very good overall condition, with only a few minor retouchings visible under ultra-violet light. The varnish is old and slightly discoloured and the painting would therefore benefit from a light surface clean.

Catalogue Note

Another larger version of this composition is in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (see W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, vol. IV, Landau 1983, p. 2606, no. 1759).
As described in Ruth 4, in accordance with the laws of Israel the transfer of property that marked the occasion of Ruth's marriage to Boaz was symbolised by her nearest kinsman giving his shoe to Boaz by the city gate.
