Description

  • Francesco Barbieri, called Il Guercino
  • Saint Francis
  • oil on copper

Condition

The actual painting is deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single copper is sound and no damages are apparent. The paint surface is secure and under a dirty varnish layer. Under UV light a few very tiny retouchings can be made out to the lower centre, to the lower right and in the upper left left. In general, the painting is in overall good condition. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame in good condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

The composition is based on a lost painting or drawing by Guercino, known through two engravings by G.B. Pasqualini dated 1629 and 1630 (see P. Bagni, Il Guercino e i suoi incisori, Rome 1988, pp. 76 & 77, cat. nos. 109 & 110, reproduced).
