  • the arms of the shooting company of Wilchingen, a shooting scene above;together with another glass design, Swiss School, circa 1635, the standard of the Canton of Zürich

  • a) Pen and black ink over traces of black lead, within black ink framing lines, on tracing paper;
    inscribed and dated in cartouche, lower center: Ein gemeine gsellschaft der Schützen zu Wilchingen 1575;

Condition

Both unframed. a) Tracing paper laid down on blue paper. Various light wrinkles throughout. Some minor spots and stains and a little surface dirt, but condition otherwise good. b) Made up and stained, lower left corner. Brown stain in lower right corner. Light horizontal creases across centre and at the top and bottom. Small hole, top left. Ink good and strong.

Catalogue Note

The design for the Wilchingen shooting company would seem to be a copy after an unknown original by Lang, which must have been executed in 1575.  The copy may have been used as the basis for a window in the museum in Winterthur.1  The second drawing belongs to the lengthy tradition of representations of Standard Bearers, with the flags of the different cantons (see lots 17 and 34).  Thöne has suggested that this drawing is an early 17th Century repetition, possibly after a prototype by one of the Langs, but itself perhaps originating from the workshop of Hans Rudolf Fries.
