Catalogue Note
Roethlisberger dates this drawing to Breenbergh's later Roman period, circa 1625-30, on account of the soft use of wash and the steep perspective. He notes that although the Basilica of Constantine appears in a number of the artist's paintings and drawings, this sheet is unusual in that the monument is viewed from the opposite direction to that which it is normally seen.1
