Condition

Paper lightly discoloured and stained throughout, and somewhat brittle. Horizontal creases across centre. Long repaired vertical tear, top centre. A few small holes. Signature slightly abraded, but ink otherwise still generally fresh. Sold in a modern wooden frame.

Catalogue Note

As is the case in quite a number of Van de Velde's drawings, the drawing that we see here is over the basis of a light chalk counterproof. This was something that Van de Velde frequently did, taking a chalk study and making one or more counterproofs, to reverse the image and thereby double the number of compositional motifs in his repertoire.  Since these counterproofed images were often rather faint, he then reworked them extensively, either in chalk or in pen and ink.
