Catalogue Note

Two other drawings of gods and goddesses by Baratta, presumably from the same series, have been identified: a Minerva in the Uffizi and a Jupiter, sold in Paris. Both are in the same medium as the present sheet and the dimensions of the Jupiter are virtually identical.  In her cataloguing of the Uffizi drawing, Mary Newcome Schleier suggests that the Minerva may be part of a decorative program celebrating the imprese of Genoa, or may relate to fresco cycles in Palazzo Pallavicini.2
