Condition

Canvas relined and the surface is pressed as a result. Under a dirty old varnish. Discolored retouches are visible to the naked eye, particularly in much of the browns and blacks of the background. Despite this the painting presents a strong image. The painting could benefit from a cleaning and updated restoration. Ultraviolet reveals more extensive retouching to background and other additional retouches. Unframed.

Catalogue Note

Sébastien de Llanos Valdés was born in Seville circa 1605.  He trained under Francisco de Herrera the Elder, and his style was strongly influenced by his Sevillian contemporaries, Zurbarán, Murillo, and Juan de Valdés Leal.  From 1661-1663, he served as the director of the Seville Academy of drawing.
