Catalogue Note

This painting appears to be after an original composition by Annibale Carracci.  Now at Hampton Court, the prime version, whose condition has suffered, has been in the Royal Collection since the reign of Charles I, when it was engraved in reverse by Vorsterman.  The engraving includes a fair amount of detail - most noticeably the soldiers in the left background of the print - that are not visible in either the original or present composition.1
