Catalogue Note
Since the 1970s, Van Cleef & Arpels has taken inspiration from the goldwork of Ancient Greece to create a limited number of bold, hand-hammered pieces such as the pair of cuffs offered here. A similar pair was included as lot 451 in the Sotheby's New York auction of the Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis held in April 1996. The sale catalogue presents a photograph of Mrs. Onassis in 1977, sporting matching cuffs and earrings, with Muhammad Ali at a pre-game celebration for the Robert F. Kennedy Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament. A pair of cuffs and earrings from the same series are included in Van Cleef & Arpels' Spirit of Beauty exhibition at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo, October 31, 2009-January 17, 2010.
