Condition
(This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Conservation, Inc.)
This painting is essentially untouched. It is stretched on its original stretcher and the canvas has no reinforcements on the reverse. The paint layer has probably never been cleaned and although it would most likely clean, at least of some surface dirt which may have been acquired over the years, the general patina is very attractive and cleaning not necessarily encouraged.
Some cracking has developed in the upper right and in odd places in the upper center, and there is a slight arc shaped group of cracks in the center right. All of these are to be expected on a canvas so finely made and gessoed. No efforts to correct the cracking is encouraged as it is unavoidable and not unattractive.
In the upper left corner right on the edge there is a little paint loss which needs to be stabilized and also in the lower left corner and also in the upper right corner under the frame. The edges may need to be stabilized and retouched yet the picture proper is in beautiful condition.
