Condition
(This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Conservation, Inc.)
This painting has been recently restored however in the future some further attempts at restoration may be warranted. The canvas is unlined but the tacking edges have been reinforced and there are five patches which have been applied to the reverse. The signature and inscription are clearly visible on the reverse and the stretcher is original.
The patches attend to some small structural damages which are secure. There is a restored break in the black shape in the lower center which is still quite uneven although it is joined and retouched accurately, and this if anything may need to be reappraised in the more focused fashion. In the upper left corner under ultraviolet light one can see that a square has been lightly cleaned to expose the original paint layer, but this is a sensitive paint layer and one should be extremely defensive when indulging in conservation. The picture could be hung as is, or improved to a degree.
