Condition

(This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Conservation, Inc.) Quite often one sees work by this artist that is in uneven condition. However, happily, this particular work is in beautiful and arguably perfect condition. The canvas is unlined, the paint layer is stable and there are no unsightly cracks to the paint layer. There are very slight signs of age in some areas. The painting is clean and lightly varnished. There are no retouches and the canvas has never been removed from its stretcher. The slight abrasions that one sees in the darkest colors (around the stars, for instance) are all intentional and the two or three small scratches in the red cloak of the character being carried by the figure on the right side are also intentional. This picture is in perfect condition and is ready to hang as is.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
