Catalogue Note

Avigdor Stematsky was born in Odessa and emigrated to Israel in 1922. There he was a founder of the New Horizons Group and participated in the first New Horizons exhibition in Tel Aviv in 1949. In 1993 he was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum. This work belongs to Stematsky's works of the fifties, which Yona Fischer describes as "...the years of Stematsky's crystallization as a mature artist... starting from the mid fifties, paintings in which the representation of identifiable elements (such as figures and buildings) is integrated with abstract patches of color (such  as squares and triangles), so that together they may build a flattened image" (Yona Fishcer (ed.), Avigdor Stematsky, Stematsky and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, 1993, p. 84).
