Catalogue Note
The painting depicts the worship of Shrinathji during the festival of Gopashtami, which marks Krishna's promotion from herder of calves to a full cowherd. This joyous festival, held annually in late autumn to honor cows, is still celebrated today. Krishna stands on a lotus at the center of the painting with the entranced cows flocking around him enchanted by the sound of his divine fluting. Above lush foliage, on each side of the full moon, divine couples gaze down upon the scene below from their celestial chariots.
