Description

  • Male Deity
  • Sandstone
  • height 16 3/4 in (42.5 cm)
The torso of a male deity, originally four-armed, wearing a pleated sampot with a double 'fish-tail' pleat at the front and a splayed end over hanging the belt, with the fabric draped over the left thigh in a series of 'pocket' style folds.

Provenance

Private New York Estate, 1996

Catalogue Note

The Pre Rup sculptural style resembles the preceding Koh Ker style retaining some of the features in the formation of the sampot. As the figure had four arms and stands in an iconic frontal position it most probably represents Vishnu, and can be compared to a figure published in Emma C. Bunker, and Douglas Latchford; Adoration and Glory: The Golden Age of Khmer Art, Chicago, 2004, pp. 178-179, fig. 55a.
