Catalogue Note

print with drypoint. Executed in 1904.

Executed during Picasso's Blue Period, Le Repas frugal is a masterpiece of 20th Century printmaking and powerfully recalls the artist's youth living in modest dwellings in the artistic quarter of Montmartre.  Le Repas frugal transcends the simple theme of abject poverty; "This Repas frugal, by pairing a blind man seeking comfort with his companion from a meagre meal of bread and wine, sums up the humanity of the Blue Period by transcending it in a drawing that is itself brilliant and a print in which the proportions are astonishingly sharp" (Pierre Daix, Dictionnaire Picasso, Paris, Robert Laffont, article "Repas frugal").
