Condition

This painting on panel has been cradled on the reverse. The paint layer is stable but the wood itself in the past developed some cracks, which most likely precipitated the cradle in the first place. These cracks run in to the center of the right side for approximately three inches. There are two others which run diagonally through the landscape and water from the center of the left side down to the center of the lower edge. At this present time there is no retouching. The paint layer appears to have been fairly recently cleaned but not restored, and the retouching still needs to be applied. In the sky there are a couple of small spots which should be retouched. The surface is stable and the cracks are for the most part level. Restoration could be properly achieved without a great deal of effort or expense. The above condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
