Catalogue Note

The present work is a brilliant testimony to Mao as one of the most iconic figures in 20th century art. It is a rare example of Buffet's talent as a portrait painter and thus provides a wonderful insight into the wide range of the artist's œuvre. Portrait de Mao was commissioned by Henri Nannen, the founder and editor in chief of Germany's Stern magazine at the time, for their editorial article on the occasion of Mao's 60th birthday.
