Catalogue Note

Painted in 1892, this lively seascape is a fine example of Boudin's most celebrated oeuvre. A close friend of Claude Monet, he exhibited at the first Impressionist Exhibition in 1874 and was considered one of the first and best plein air painters. Initially the owner of a painter's stationery shop frequented by Monet, Boudin never considered himself a radical, avant-garde artist. Yet in the present work the swift, spontaneous brushwork and challenging Impressionist style were as modern as anyone else that exhibited in that pivotal 1874 Salon des Independents exhibition.
