Description

  • Gaspar van Wittel, called Vanvitelli
  • A view of St. Peter's Basilica, Rome
  • oil on canvas

Condition

Canvas is relined. Overall, painting is in a good state of preservation, with good retention of coloration and impasto, especially in the foreground and architectural structures. Paint appears to be a bit dirty and thin in the sky and could benefit from a light cleaning. U.V. light reveals minor retouches throughout, though predominantly in the sky. In the area to the left of the Basilica dome, a slightly larger patch of retouching applied to craquelure. Similar minor retouches throughout right half of sky to address areas of thinness. Foreground and architecture seem to be very well preserved. A few retouches along edges, predominantly in building but nothing overly disturbing. In a carved giltwood frame with six gilded floral carvings attached.
