Catalogue Note
We are grateful to Francesco Petrucci who, based on images, has confirmed the attribution to Gaulli; he believes it to be an early work datable to circa 1670. The figure may represent one of the Magi, possibly Balthasar holding a vase of myrrh and looking heavenward to search for the star, and may have been one of a series that portrayed the three Magi.
