Description

  • Neapolitan School
  • A Pair of Architectural Ruins
  • a pair, oil on canvas

Condition

Glue relinings are firm and stable on both paintings. Painting with architecture on left: the paint surface is generally well preserved in architecture and figures which retain nice detail; the sky area upper right is a bit pressed and thin. ultraviolet light reveals retouches at upper edge; others scattered in sky (these have discolored and are mostly visible to naked eye) and foreground; a larger area of retouching can be seen at center on the two columns over what appears to be an old repaired compound tear. Painting with architecture on right and pyramid: a bit pressed overall and thin in sky areas, but painting still reads well. ultraviolet light reveals retouches throughout the sky at upper left, where there appears to be an old repaired tear, and under the archway at middle left; there is also retouching over another old repaired horizontal tear in the architecture at the right side in middle. otherwise, just a few others here and there. This pair of paintings would benefit from sensitive restoration and a readdressing of some of the old restorations that could be improved upon. In carved and gilt wood frames.
