Catalogue Note

This oil sketch is a preliminary rendering for a section of the ceiling decoration of the Grand Staircase in the Paris Opera.  Pils won the commission in 1865 to decorate four large areas of the vault over the staircase with subjects depicting the glorification of the arts.  The Greek god Apollo, here represented as the Sun-God driving his golden chariot, was patron of poetry and music.  The other subjects he depicted are The Charm of Music, The City of Paris Receiving the Plan for the New Opera, and Minerva Struggling with "Brute Force" in front of the Olympians.  This enormous project, which was Pils' last, was completed in 1875 with the help of his pupils.
