Description

  • Giovanni Battista Beinaschi
  • Head of Christ
  • oil on canvas, laid down on panel

Condition

Canvas laid onto single panel, slightly bowed. Discolored strips run along the edges of the panel, possibly added later and/or abraded by frame. Under U.V. these strips are more perceptible and reveals the remnants probably of a now repaired crack to the panel. U.V. light also reveals retouching along the top edge of the panel, as well as smaller repaired nicks here and there. Otherwise, the painting is in quite good condition and retains the majority of its original paint and impasto most noticeably along the cheeks and hair line of Christ.

Catalogue Note

Beinaschi, a prolific engraver and draftsman as well as painter, worked at the court of the princes of Savoy in Turin from 1642. A decade later he moved south to Rome where he studied the Baroque style exemplified by Giovanni Lanfranco, together with his contemporary Giacinto Brandi. While Beinaschi worked for much of his life in Rome, in 1664 he moved definitively to Naples, where he was to work for the final twenty years of his life.
