Description

  • Sir Peter Paul Rubens
  • Adoration of the Magi
  • oil on canvas

Condition

Painting has a wax relining. Some areas have been pressed as a result. Browns of upper right background have thinned and this area has subsequently much of its definition as well as the side of the balustrade at center of Virgin's head. However, most of the other figures are much better preserved and retain much of their coloration. Canvas seem runs down the center of the painting from top to bottom visible to naked eye. U.V. reveals scattered retouches throughout composition. A large repaired compound tear in upper right background is visible. Another repaired tear is visible on bottom of magi's robe. In a large giltwood frame. For a painting of this size, it is in reasonable condition and still presents a very strong image.
