Description

  • 230cm. high, 217 long, 117cm. wide; 7ft. 6½in., 7ft. 1¼in., 3ft. 10in.; the coverlets 196cm. long; 6ft. 5in.
together with a pair of embroidered ivory cotton coverlets, one embroidered with the coat-of-arms of Thompson impaling Lowther centred by mirror cypher monograms, `MT and `ME' including the date `1764' above the motto `JE VECUS DE BONNE GUERRE', the othe with a cappricio, both profusely worked with leaves and flowers

Provenance

The coverlets almost certainly made for George and Martha Thompson.

Catalogue Note

The arms on one of the coverlets are probably those of George Thompson (b. before 1735) who married Martha, daughter of Christopher Lowther, in 1750.
