Description

  • 11cm. high, 26cm. wide, 14cm. deep; 4¼in., 10¼in., 5½in.
bearing emblematic shields representing Ireland, England, Scotland and France, the interior with divisions and a secret drawer revealed by a sliding end panel, one end with a  dancetty closet and two escallops beneath a ducal coronet enclosed in a shield

Condition

Good general original condition. The top has an old chip on the back left hand side. Some age cracks to the right hand side and base and minor losses. The interior with some old stains. Some of the internals divisions possibly added at a later date. Minor chips consistent with age and use.

A Charles II boarded oak desk box bearing a harp and the cross of St George together with related chip carved decoration is illustrated in Victory Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, 1979, p. 181, figs. 2:193-2:194 .

The armorial carving on the present lot also relates to that on various snuff boxes one of which was sold with a provenance of the Percival D. Griffiths and Frederick Poke Collections, Sotheby`s London, Important English Furniture, 13 June 2001, lot 70, another forming part of the Lee Collection, Sotheby`s London, 28th November 2001, lot 82 and further example, Sotheby`s London, Important English Furniture, 20th November 2007, lot 11.
