Catalogue Note
The author of this very original model of andiron of about 1710 is unknown, although André-Charles Boulle has been suggested (see: H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 71. fig. 1.10.9).
Eighteenth century examples of this model include a pair in the Frick Collection (T. Dell, Furniture in the Frick Collection, 1992, pt. 2, pp. 243-248), a pair formerly in the Rezidenz, Munich (H. Ottomeyer, op. cit., p. 71), a pair in the Swedish Royal collection, Drottningholm, and a pair in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
