Description

One chair with an old partial printed paper label to the back rail inscribed Upholstery Warehouses, / WARDOUR STREET / LOND...  Alterations.

Condition

The first pair in good restored condition; the first chair with horizontal age cracks to the center of the cresting rail over the lines of construction and old repaired break over the line of construction with the splat; old repaired breaks to the pierced splat with some patches, infilling and inpainting; old repaired breaks to the tops of the stiles at join with the cresting rail and now with an added fillet at each join with some inpainting; front left leg with two plugs to the right side at join with right side seat rail; fillet at join of front right leg and right seat rail due to shrinkage; one corner of each back foot with a small replaced section; The other chair with an old repaired horizontal break over the lines of construction with the pierced splat; the lower part of the carving to the central part of the cresting rail together with the splat is replaced; old repaired breaks to the cresting rail at joins with the stiles with inpainting and now with a fillet to the top of each stile at the joins; two back legs each with a replaced chip to one corner of the foot. The second pair in good restored condition; the first chair with a replaced cresting rail; rectangular patch to the armrest close to join with stile; the blind fret carving to the legs later; later scrolled brackets; back legs spliced; front legs with additions to the feet. The other chair with and old repaired break to the cresting rail at the center above the join with the splat; old repaired breaks to the ends of the cresting rail at joins with the stiles and subsequent old breaks to the tops of the stiles a join with the cresting rail and now with fillets at the join and a later tenon to the right stile; the shoe now showing the tenon between the bottom of the right stile and the back rail; blind fret carving to the legs and apron later. Overall with old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises and overall with a later finish with some areas of inpainting in areas.
