Catalogue Note

The X-frame stool of the present lot is after a Gillows design found in the Estimate Sketch Book in 1827; however, the firm had illustrated an X-frame stool as early as the 1760s and supplied eight X-frame stools (six in satinwood and two in mahogany) to Wilbraham Egerton of Tatton Park, Cheshire in 1812.  A pair of these stools is illustrated in Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. I, p. 217, pl. 197.  An almost identical pair of X-frame stools attributed to Gillows sold Christie's, London, June 4, 2009, lot 134.  See: N. Goodison & J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, p. 22.
