Catalogue Note

This girandole is characteristic of the exuberance of English rococo design found in the work of Thomas Chippendale and Thomas Johnson, amongst others: a Ho-Ho bird with outstretched wings stands on a scrolled support, the asymmetrical frame composed of conjoined C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, flowering branches and a rockwork bottom with flowerheads, the pierced apron composed of conjoined ruffle-carved C-scrolls.  Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1762, 3rd ed., illustrates related designs for 'Girandoles', pl. CLXXXVIII.
