Catalogue Note

From 1924 until 1930, when his health finally prevented him from travelling out west every year to his beloved Rockies, MacDonald spent much of each summer painting in this inspiring region.  He was particularly drawn to Lake O'Hara with its glacial-green colour and its setting high among the snowy peaks that surround it.  Like Lawren Harris, fellow artist and theosophist, MacDonald found a particularly strong spiritual power in this location.  This in turn drew him to create some of the most original forms and compositions of his entire career on both the small oil sketches on panel, such as this one.
