Description

  • John James Audubon (after)
  • Black Throated Diver (Plate CCCXLVI)
  • sheet 641 by 965 mm 25 1/4 by 38 inches
Hand-colored etching, engraving and aquatint, by R. Havell, on paper with the watermark J. Whatman 1836, with margins, in good condition except the colors attenuated, the sheet edges with time stain, three repaired tears, the upper sheet edge trimmed, framed

Condition

The red in the eyes of the birds at left and right has faded away. The greens of the grass and blue of the sky, once rich in tone are now noticeably muted. The sheet edges have darkened over time and there are three tears backed by linen tape, the longest measuring 1". The upper sheet edge has been unevenly shaved and has a few horizontal creases along with a very small paper loss at the extreme upper right corner. Finally, two light vertical creases and some handling creases are visible in sky.
