Description

  • John James Audubon (after)
  • Snowy Owl (Plate CXXI)
  • sheet 977 by 661 mm 38 3/8 by 26 in
Hand-colored etching, engraving and aquatint, by R. Havell, 1831, on paper with the watermark J. Whatman 1931, with margins, stitch holes along the dis-bound edge at left, in good condition apart from light- and mat stain, three repaired tears at the sheet edges, framed

Condition

The print is in good condition overall. As described in the catalogue entry, there is discoloration in the margins caused by exposure to light and an acidic mat, darkest at the mat opening. The longest of the repaired tears measures 7/8" at lower left. Two additional tears measuing 1/2" and 1/4" are located at the upper right corner, all three are backed with linen tape. The paper is lightly rippled in the upper margin and there are two foxmarks on the verso, one showing through very slightly at the lower edge of the image.
